This week I began my research about chronic pain, suffering and disabilities at the site Joni and Friends.Joni and Friends is a site dedicated to helping equip ministry workers and churches with the information needed to help support and minister to those with disabilities. The site also features many resources for individuals struggling with various problems associated with disabilities such as weakness and grief. This site wouldn’t be possible if it were not for a woman who has suffered much but through it all has found ways to praise God and has helped others to do the same, Joni Eareckson Tada.
Here is a snap shot of Mrs. Tada’s biography from her website:
Joni Eareckson Tada is the founder of Joni and Friends, an organization accelerating Christian ministry in the disability community. A diving accident in 1967 left Mrs. Tada a quadriplegic in a wheelchair, unable to use her hands. After two years of rehabilitation, Joni re-entered the community with new skills and a fresh determination to help others in similar situations. “My church made a huge difference in my family’s life as they demonstrated the love of God in practical ways,” says Joni. Mrs. Tada wrote of her experiences in her international best-selling biography, Joni. Her name is now recognized in countries around the world following the distribution in many languages of her biography and the full-length feature film JONI. She has personally visited over 41 countries. Continue reading…
Book Recommendations
As I looked up information to help my readers I found a few books from her site that I thought I’d recommend.
The Game and the Glory: An Autobiography by Michelle Ackers and Gregg Lewis

Michelle Akers suffers from CFIDS (Chronic Fatigue Immune Deficiency Syndrom). Akers shares her story of salvation, suffering, and triumph. View here
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Christianity and Culture: Between God and an Illness, by James M. Rotholz
Here is the book description from Amazon.com
“(The Haworth Medical Press) Offers a window into the author’s suffering and challenges the disabled and healthy to reject our culture’s limiting view defining success in life. Without minimizing the losses and the difficulties, the author’s biblical views provide encouragement and support.”
Next week I hope to begin looking to practical ways to help ease pain and fatigue. As for now I leave you with a scripture that I hope will encourage you and build your faith today!
1 Corinthians 1:27
“But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong…”

Have you ever wanted to run or walk a 5k, 10k, half marathon, or full but didn’t have the motivation to keep going? For the next 17 weeks I hope to help you -we are going to train together! Here’s how it will work:
- 1. Register on my site by entering your information on the contact form or emailing me directly at trillfitness@gmail.com. Write Let’s Train in the subject line. Give me your name, address and email address.
- 2. Begin your training by choosing your training program. We will be using Jeff Galloway’s half marathon training program but you can choose to do the 5 or 10k or if you’re really ambitious you can choose the entire marathon!
- 3. Keep a log of all of your running by using the form you’ll receive once you register. For accountability you can choose to email your form back to me or a friend each Friday or save it for your own benefit and records.
- 4. Choose a road race to participate in. Find a road race in your city or surrounding area to participate in. If you do not have a half marathon near you, run a 5k.
- 5. At the end of 17 weeks you will let me know how you did and where you ran your race.
Why Register?
PRIZES will be awarded to those who register through drawings and various other events. Prizes and events will be announced later.
Accountability and encouragement! Training “with” someone or a group is a wonderful motivator. Even if we are not running side by side you will know that you (and several others from around the globe) are running “together”. We won’t know if you are not registered.
My Personal Journal and Suggested Reading
Every other Friday, beginning next week, I’ll be blogging about my training experience. You’ll get an honest look into training for a marathon including triumphs and failures, good days and bad as it relates to training. At the beginning of April I will begin a series on a new book Are You Fit for Life? by Jack Graham, published by Crossway Books. I look forward to sharing more about this book soon. If you would like to join me in reading Are You Fit for Life? you can preorder the book by clicking here.

I enjoy food. Actually, I love food! I think about food, I make up recipes, I cook often- you get the picture. I guess you could say I hunger for and desire food. Lately I have experienced a great and powerful desire for something greater- someone greater. God has brought me to an end of myself and I am seeing more and more my need for him. God has helped bring about this illumination through A Hunger for God, by John Piper. I have been reading this book for the past few weeks and by God’s grace I have been convicted of a lack of passion for Him. The good news is by His grace I can have a passion for Him! If you find yourself in a dry and weary place join me in crying out to the Lord for help, mercy in time of need, and fresh grace for the race!
“And you shall remember the whole way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not. And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.”
Deuteronomy 8: 2-3 (ESV)

I have a section on my sidebar for books that I have read or believe is relevant to the topics discussed on this blog. During the next few weeks I will be posting more information about each book (from the words of the publisher) and its relevance to Trill Fitness. Feel free to click on the image to purchase the book or find out more information!
Book 1: A Hunger for God by John Piper

“This book invites readers to turn from the dulling effects of food and other appetites and to express through the biblical practice of fasting their desire for God,” (Crossway Books).
It is difficult to fast; to deny ourselves of anything is hard. I own this book and plan to reread it this year. John Piper’s wisdom and love for God pours out of the pages of his book and will teach us to be satisfied in God alone. As you’ll see in topics later, being satisfied in God alone will affect the way we diet.
