Water Please

Spring is over here in the South. We are experiencing 90 degree weather and little rain. Don’t get me wrong, I am thoroughly enjoying the sunshine and increased daylight, but when I’m teaching a BODYSTEP™ class at 9 am and it feels like we are standing in a sauna, the warm temperatures can be a little overbearing. When I came home after my class my stomach began to ache and I started to get a headache. Later I was very lethargic and could barely keep my eyes open. Today I believe I experienced a very small reaction to a major loss of fluids through sweat and not adequately hydrating called dehydration.

There are several causes of dehydration including diarrhea and vomiting, bacterial infections, and the one we are going to focus on excessive sweating without out hydration. If you have been running, exercising in the heat or if you are exercising in a room without much air, make sure to stay hydrated taking breaks for a little sip of water. If you are training for an endurance race or exercise try to drink plenty of fluids two hours prior to the event.  Once you have completed your exercise make sure to drink plenty of fluids to restore what has been lost.  The goal is to be well hydrated before you exercise so that you won’t be dehydrated after. Think of it like a family loading up in a car to go on a long drive for vacation. Most of us fill up our cars in preparation for a trip. We also need to fuel up (or fill up ) to prevent depleting what is stored in our bodies.

One way to test dehydration is to check to make sure your urine is clear and also monitor the amount of times you urinate. If your urine is clear and you go to the restroom often (more than once or twice in an eight hour period) then you may be safe.

If you are unsure if you are experience dyhydration the Mayo Clinic has a great list of symptoms (see below)

Mild to moderate dehydration is likely to cause:

  • Dry, sticky mouth
  • Sleepiness or tiredness - children are likely to be less active than usual
  • Thirst
  • Decreased urine output - fewer than six wet diapers a day for infants and eight hours or more without urination for older children and teens
  • Few or no tears when crying
  • Muscle weakness
  • Headache
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness

Severe dehydration, a medical emergency, can cause:

  • Extreme thirst
  • Extreme fussiness or sleepiness in infants and children; irritability and confusion in adults
  • Very dry mouth, skin and mucous membranes
  • Lack of sweating
  • Little or no urination - any urine that is produced will be dark yellow or amber
  • Sunken eyes
  • Shriveled and dry skin that lacks elasticity and doesn’t “bounce back” when pinched into a fold
  • In infants, sunken fontanels - the soft spots on the top of a baby’s head
  • Low blood pressure
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Fever
  • In the most serious cases, delirium or unconsciousness

I hope you enjoy your summer and take the precautions needed to avoid dehydration. Drink plenty of fluids and take necessary breaks to keep your body temperature low.

Technical Difficulties and Updates

Technical Difficulties

Lately the site has been experiencing some difficulties loading and I haven’t been able to access the blog. Please forgive me for this little interruption to my series of blogs. My site administrator has been looking into the problems and we will hopefully begin seeing some improvements.

Updates

I have had the opportunity to interact with several individuals about health, fitness and the Lord. I am so humbled and thankful for the people who read this little blog. Please continue to email me with questions, comments or ideas. Remember the best way to reach me is trillfitness@gmail.com.

This past month I went to the Hope Resource Center to speak with a wonderful group of pregnant and postnatal moms about fitness and nutrition during pregnancy. We then did a series of exercises that anyone can do and that are safe for pregnancy. This month I will have the joy of teaching innercity children about exercise and fitness at SOAR Youth Ministries summer camp. I look forward to being with the children. My son will also be with me so this should be quite an adventure.

Thank you for visiting and keep coming back!

On Hiatus

Please forgive me for my lack of posts. I have been gathering participants for the April training, enjoying the spring with my son with trips to the zoo and such, and  doing tax stuff for my husband. I hope to begin posting again soon. My goal would be to have a new and prayerfully useful post up by next Tuesday. Thanks for your patience and thank you for stopping by!

Blessings,

Trillia

Frequently Asked Questions about Let’s TrainTogether

I have had a few questions and thought this post would be helpful.

1. I am from another country. Can I participate in the training?

Absolutely! Please join us. If there are not road races in your particular city or town feel free just to do the training!

2. I would like to participate but would like to remain anonymous. Is this possible?

Yes. You can participate and remain anonymous. None of the other participants ever have to know you participated and if you win a prize your name will not be displayed or announced as long as you let me know you want to be anonymous. Please let me know though that you are participating!

3. It’s cold outside and I just can’t run in the cold. Can I train inside?

Yes! I can’t get myself to run outside yet either! At some point it will be good to take it on the road because road resistance and a treadmill are quite different.

4. How long should my runs be?

Next week I hope to dive into the actual training process a little further. You can also peruse Jeff Galloway’s site for more information. Please remember, this is my first time too. I will be learning along with you!

5. What are some cross training I can do?

Cycle, weights, elliptical machine, etc. I will post some exercises throughout the next few weeks to give you ideas on how to maximize your cross training.

6. Can I walk the entire 5k, 10k, or half marathon and still participate?

Absolutely! You do not have to run.

7. When does registeration close?

Register by April 1 to be included in the various drawings for the last month . You can look back on my entries and continue the 17 week training starting on the date you would like.

Feel free to contact me on the contact page if you have any additional questions.
