To me, the greatest moment in sports was during the 1968 Mexico City Olympics when Bob Beamon broke the world record in the long jump by 2 and 1/2 feet. Although the world record has since been broken, just once I think, the Olympic record stands to this day, surely one of the longest lasting Olympic records. I can still see Beamon’s face as he repeatedly looked at the scoreboard in disbelief, then put his head back down in his hands as he sat, almost in shock. The man was truly humbled by his own accomplishment, no grandstanding. And he stood quietly and respectfully on the medal stand during an Olympics where his accomplishment was overshadowed by the Black Power salute of several of his fellow athletes.
